Features & Benefits
Easy to Install
Installation is straightforward, requiring only basic carpentry and coating tools. PermaBase is installed in successive courses using 1”x4” purlins as spacers, attached to rafters or roof sheathing. The Acrylabs liquid-applied, fully reinforced membrane is then applied, flashing all penetrations and wrapping over fascia and rake boards for termination. Hips, valleys, ridges, and other transitions are fully sealed without additional flashing materials. With no loose edges or vulnerable points, the Island Style Roof resists wind and wind-driven rain.
The finished roof offers strong curb appeal and functions as an architectural feature. It suits all roof types with slopes from 2:12 up to vertical surfaces, including hip, gable, and shed roofs. Available in pastel finishes and a highly reflective white, the system helps keep the roof cool.

Attractive Design
The Island Style Roof is built on Acrylabs’ proven commercial roof membrane technology, in use since the late 1990s. Known for its durability, the seamless liquid-applied system has been installed across millions of square feet. To adapt this technology for sloped roofs, Acrylabs partnered with National Gypsum engineers to incorporate PermaBase and create an appealing roof profile. Inspired by traditional island architecture—specifically the Bermuda style—the system blends time-tested design with modern materials to deliver a high-performance, visually striking roof.
Seamless
Acrylabs liquid-applied roof systems are built in multiple coats with fabric reinforcement embedded between layers. Applied as a liquid, the membrane conforms seamlessly to any shape, including the stepped Island Style Roof profile. The result is a fully adhered, watertight, and wind-resistant membrane that won’t blow off like shingles or peel back like metal or single-ply roofs. The same components used across the roof field are also used to form tight, integrated flashings at penetrations—eliminating the need for clamps, boots, or other vulnerable accessories.

Flexible
The Island Style Roof is engineered to perform in extreme climates, from the frigid cold of Alaska and the Yukon to the intense heat and humidity of the Caribbean. Designed to remain stable and flexible across a wide temperature range—from -60°F (-50°C) to well over 100°F (40°C)—the system resists cracking, splitting, and thermal stress. Whether exposed to ice, snow, salt air, or tropical downpours, the Island Style Roof delivers lasting protection and year-round performance.
Hurricane Resistant
The Island Style Roof is engineered and tested for extreme wind conditions, including hurricanes. It is approved for use in Florida’s High Velocity Hurricane Zone (HVHZ) under the 6th Edition (2017) of the Florida Building Code. In testing, the system withstood uplift pressures up to 300 psf—enough force to compromise structural framing—equating to wind speeds exceeding 240 MPH. While results vary by building type, a properly installed Island Style Roof is built to endure Category 5 hurricanes with sustained winds over 155 MPH.

Fire Rated
PermaBase lightweight cementitious roof boards form a durable, stable foundation for the Acrylabs membrane system. These boards are moisture- and rot-resistant, offer excellent impact strength, and are built to withstand harsh environmental conditions. In addition to enhancing structural performance, PermaBase plays a key role in the Island Style Roof’s exceptional fire resistance. The complete assembly has been rigorously tested and carries a Class A Fire Rating—the highest classification for fire performance in roofing systems. See our testing page here.
UV Stable
Most roofing materials break down over time when exposed to sunlight. UV radiation degrades even the highest-quality tiles, shingles, and asphalt-based systems—leading to cracking, fading, and premature failure. In contrast, the Acrylabs membrane used in the Island Style Roof is a 100% acrylic formulation engineered for exceptional UV resistance. Designed to endure intense sun exposure year after year, the membrane retains its performance and appearance with minimal signs of wear—delivering lasting protection in even the most sun-drenched environments.

Sustainable
The Island Style Roof is designed for long-term performance and sustainability. Its stability allows for simple renewal every 10 to 15 years with a single maintenance coat—eliminating the need for costly tear-offs or full replacements. This not only extends the life of the roof system indefinitely, but also reduces landfill waste and ongoing material costs. Building owners can even refresh the look by choosing a new finish color during recoating, giving the roof a like-new appearance without starting from scratch.
